Round 1 - Predicted Log (6th April)
Despite the cold windy weather there were eleven entries for the first round of the Scale Challenge. There were also a number of spectators and a photographer (thanks Alan).
We had a simple Predicted Log course because it gets dark early this time of the year and no one wanted to spend too much time in the cold.
The small course contributed to a lot of low scores and many tied places.
Bob Bryant tied with Zech Stephenson for first place and third place was shared by Mark Sutton and Kevin Roberts.

Tug Towing 8th June (not part of the Challenge Series/none point scoring event)

The annual Tug Towing event is non-scoring but just as competitive. The pairs are selected at random and it was fortunate that the most experienced skippers were separated resulting in a fairly even contest.
The final results were,

1. Chris Locke & Bob Bryant
2. Malcolm Franks & Rod Butler
3. Russ Chilcott & Dave Lowther
4. Keith Petrie & Dave Giddings
5. Rob Arlett & Daron Maynard

The new members may not know that Chris, Malcolm and Russ competed regularly in the SWAMBC Tug Towing events and were among the best in the area. Chris and Peggy Franks were runners up at the national championships and were unlucky not to win it.

Round 4 - Range Test & Predicted Log (29th June)

The weather was unsettled so we decided to have a Range Test and a Predicted Log instead of the planned Scale Steering. It turned out to be the right decision because it rained as soon as we had finished.

The scores were very close in the range test and Chris Locke took the honors with only one penalty point. Rod Butler was second with two points and Malcolm Franks and Russ Chilcott shared third place on three points.

The scores were just as close in the Predicted Log and Daron Maynard was first with a time difference of only two seconds. Mark Sutton, Chris Locke and Bob Bryant shared second place with three seconds.
The competition was well supported with nine members taking part.

Round 6 - Steering competition (10th August)

This was the final round of the series and despite the windy weather we decided to run a steering competition as we hadn't run one so far in the series. A course with 10 obstacles was set out, hitting the horn pad on the lighthouse and the two push-apart gates proved to be the "tricky" ones.
Each entrant had to complete 2 steering courses on the night, one going through the obstacles clockwise and then anti-clockwise but each counting as separate events/scores for the overall points.

It was very close between the top 4 for the overall series and this meetings score would decide their places, so it was agreed one person Rob Arlett would score all 4 each time.

Course 1 was won by Bob Bryant scoring just 8 points, with Russ Chilcott and Chris Locke tied on 9pts. Course 2 was won by Russ with 3pts, Malcolm Franks took 2nd place on 6 with Chris and Daron Maynard tied for 3rd on 12.

As it turned out Chris collected just enough points on the night to win the overall Scale Challenge series by the narrowest of margins he beat Bob 124 points to 123! Not too far behind them both was Russ in 3rd place on 121 with Daron 4th on 116.
