Due to a very busy calendar this year’s Alice Trophy event was run on Easter Sunday. In a bid to see if we could get a few more taking part there was no entry fee and it was run an hour earlier than usual so we could finish early afternoon. The meeting OOD Scott Smart got the 10 skippers together for a briefing at 8.55am and the boats on the water and Race 1 underway promptly at 9am.
There was a brisk westerly breeze which stayed very constant the entire meeting and was coming through between the wide gap in the trees which meant we didn’t have the usual “Apex holes” to contend with!
Right from the start Bob Conner racing his new blue Britpop was out in front, most of the time he was closely followed by last year’s winner Richard Aucott racing a cream Britpop boat. A few other skippers split the pair on occasions, notably Nigel Clarke and Scott who took 2 race wins each.
We had an early lunch break at 11.30am with the 18th and last race run just as planned by 1.30pm. A quick tot up on the lap top showed Bob was the clear winner having won 10 races his total after discards was just 12 points. Richard was clear in 2nd place on 20, with Nigel best of the rest in 3rd place on 28.
All in all the earlier start and finish format seemed to worked ok, at least most were able to be
off home by 2pm for their roast turkey and Easter eggs!
