Small Yacht Elimination Race
Sunday November 6th
A different type of racing for SYS today, as we held our very first Elimination Race. The object for each skipper was not to be last and thus be eliminated from the rest of the race.
With a strengthening but shifting wind the first races began. Each fleet raced separately for this event having two races before changing over. The slalom course was set on the right side of the lake and proved that even with wind Apex can still be difficult to sail well every race.
The first part of the event, before coffee break, belonged to Rod Butler (MC class) and Russ Chilcott (RTR class) although the field were pretty close. With the wind almost turning full circle it was decided to move the course completely to the slipway end of the lake.
Racing began again and Rod Butler (MC class) had a string of poor results for him, which allowed Kevin Roberts, who was more consistent, begin to edge ahead. Russ Chilcott (RTR class) continued racing well but the eventual winner just about held his form to snatch the win coming second in the final race and winning by one point.
Congratulations to Alan Barnstable (RTR) and Kevin Roberts (MC) who took the trophies for the event this year.
SYS takes a winter break now and will return in 2017 with the Endurance Race in early January. If you have a small yacht and haven’t raced for a while then make sure you are ready for the start of the new season.
