SYS Endurance Race Sunday 15th January

With many skippers modifying their boats over the winter break we had for the first time ever in a SYS event more skippers competing in the MC/Kit class than the RTR.
To take advantage of the breeze blowing from the right of the launch ramp the course ran parallel to the shore.
With twelve skippers spread over the two classes the race began just before 11:00am. As the countdown box began, you could feel the concentration within the fleet and then the claxon went for the start of the hour and we were away!
However, almost from the start of the hour race the pattern was set and by turn 3 Russ, Alan and Rod were setting the early pace, leaving Kevin, Mike, Keith and Richard B vying for the minor places.
The fleet gradually began to spread around the course with missed buoys, the odd penalty turn and stalling on and around turn 4 the main problems. Well those were my excuses! Skippers began to have their own mini battles with yachts close by, with friendly banter and good humour. Rod with Russ, Kevin with Mike and Daron with Robert just to name a few.

As the hour started to reduce to a few minutes the race was almost settled in both classes, with the eventual second placed skippers never really being able to catch the winners. As the hour whistle was blown both of the winners were a good ¾ of a lap ahead of their nearest rivals.

Congratulations to both of the winners. Also, a warm welcome to Arley returning back to RC sailing after a thirteen-year gap.
I would also like to thank Carol Roberts for lap scoring again this year. I think it was a fantastic start to the new season, bring on the first series race in February!
