MYA IOM Yachts Winter Series 2018

MYA IOM yacht Winter Series 2018 - 4th Feb

Report, scores & photos by Russ Chilcott

16 skippers had travelled to the Apex for this round (a replacement of round 2) which was now the third and final in the MYA IOM Winter Series. Clubs from Bideford, Yeovil, Poole, Dartmoor, Newquay, Woodspring and our own were represented. It was a very cold but dry day with a north wind which gradually increased as the day went on.
The RO Scott Smart set a long course with a gate at the downwind leg so there was a chance for some to make a tactical decision and gain an advantage …or not!

John Taylor, Richard Aucott, John Stone, James and Tony Edwards set the early pace each winning a race before a much needed coffee break to get the fingers warmed up! The break did something to Mike Cooke as he came back and put together a couple of wins and along with Bob Conner moved up the score sheet.
After the lunch it was getting a bit too cold for some and a few retired leaving 12 brave souls to carry on racing into the afternoon in what had turned into a really bitterly cold wind. The conditions meant everyone quickly agreed to the suggestion to stop racing at 3pm.
Mike carried on his form with a run of 8 races finishing inside the top 3. This was enough for him to secure the meeting win with a nice 8 point cushion. Richard finished in 2nd place just doing enough to hold off Bob who had to settle for 3rd.

There was a quick presentation of bottles of wines to the top 3 places and all were soon off into their cars I suspect with the heating on full blast - this really had felt like a “Winter” series meeting!

Well done to Mike on the win, and thanks to Scott who did a super job as RO aided by Daron Maynard throughout a long cold day.

Our club did really well taking 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 10th places, Bob who finished in 3rd was racing for Woodspring club but is also Sedgemoor member and a regular at Apex – so we’ll take some credit for that place also!
