SYS Series 2017
Round 1 - 12th February
The first round of the SYS Series began with a bitterly cold day. The predicted wind speeds of 15mph plus from the East didn’t relate to what was happening on the lake, with the usual inconsistent pockets of still air. The conditions meant that skippers making a wrong tack at the wrong time lost winning a position, quite often-falling way back in the fleet. The combination of variable wind conditions and a small competitive main fleet meant that there was some good racing over the day, with 7 different skippers winning the fleet races before classification.
Russ (7) RTR and Kevin (88) MC were the more consistent in their classes before the coffee break. During the break the course was changed slightly to take advantage of the stronger breeze and the slight change in wind direction. The course change produced even closer fleet racing with 5 or 6 skippers often within a few boats lengths of each other at the last buoy before a difficult haul back to the finish.
At the end of the 16th fleet race it was decided that everyone was too cold to carry on and the first and possibly coldest SYS race ever was at an end.
Round one winner(s) were RTR Russ Chilcott (7) and MC/Kit Kevin Roberts (88).
The next round will be March 12th at 10:00am.
