Small Yacht Series 2018

SYS Series 2018

Round 1 Sunday 21st January

The SYS calendar began with possibly one of the wettest days possible. Despite the very heavy rain 15 skippers made the effort to compete. The course was set in an offset oblong, running parallel to the ramp to take advantage of what wind there was. As the races began the breeze lessened so that the yachts were drifting more than racing by our last race (we only managed 6 in total).
As the races took longer and longer, the course was shortened twice so that we could get some races finished. As the rain continued skippers began to have reliability problems with the main culprit being water creeping into the soaking wet transmitters (despite rain covers). This was a real shame as the retirements had a marked affect upon the final placing.

The racing was (as what seems the norm now) quite close throughout the fleet, with some good battles between Chris (43) and Kevin (88). Russ (7) and Tony (185) also had some good tussles with some close finishes between other skippers further back in the field.
By the last race, at 12 o’clock, the field had shrunk to only 8 skippers and the breeze had completely disappeared, (AND STILL RAINING) so it was decided that enough was enough!
Drying out boats and kit would be the priority Sunday evening for everyone.

Congratulations to this round winner Kevin Roberts.

The next SYS meet is on Sunday 18th February for the Endurance Race. PLEASE NOTE the race starts at 11:00am.
